Penthouse And Pavement is considered to be one of the first political electronic dance concept albums of the 1980s. The single ‘(We Don't Need This) Fascist Groove Thang’ demonstrates the left-wing political outlook of the lyrics, and looks at early 1980s Britain under Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and the rise of the Yuppie. The album’s controversial themes includes nuclear war (‘Lets All Make A Bomb’), religious extremism, and America’s global influence. Penthouse And Pavement is featured in the book ‘1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die’.

Marc Almond
Varietè

Critically acclaimed and popularly adored, one of Britain's most musically eclectic singer/songwriters, Marc Almond, releases his new album Varietè on 7th June through Cherry Red Records. Varietè is Marc's first complete album of self-written songs since Open All Night, over a decade ago. The first 3000 copies of the album will be in a limited edition digipack with an exclusive bonus acoustic CD featuring additional unreleased tracks.

In this, Marc's 30th year as a recording artist, Varietè, revisits the eras of Marc's personal and musical life providing an eloquent and sometimes nostalgic, insight into what defines him as a performer.

Marc has always excelled at mixing musical genres and writing vividly poignant lyrics, as well as collaborating with musicians of note. Variete is produced and arranged by Marc himself, with the exception of 3 tracks (The Trials of Eyeliner, Bread and Circus and Soho So Long) which are produced and co-arranged by Tris Penna, who produced much of Marc's 2007 album Stardom Road.

Marc shares his thoughts on the decades that formed his personal and creative growth, his influences and his inspiration for his brand new, self-penned, album Varietè.

"The album deals with the themes of the changing times, a yearning for simplicity, regret at loss, growing older, loneliness through the eyes of a performer, madness, letting go, acceptance, as well as our obsession with nostalgia. For me the past and a sense of history is what gives us soul and humanity, gives us value. I wanted to celebrate nostalgia.

This is a personal record of my own life, and the decades I've grown through : born in the 1950's, a child of the 60's, a troubled teen of the 70's, a star of the 80's, a casuality of the 90's, an actual road casuality in the new millenium, and from it a rehabilitated and re-invented sense of self.

It is also about the analogy of Variete and circus, the buzzwords of our times as both come to symbolize much of modern life. A night of thrills or a sequence of amazing events by people who are good at doing just one thing. Shallow shows of music, comedy, dance and the bizarre, often incorporating daring feat's to dazzle, distract and enterntain....

...Varietè is simply a collection of colourful, personal, intropective and reflective songs. And I hope you love it as much as I enjoyed making it" MARC ALMOND 2010

17 May 2010 - Some Hue & Cry News

Hi all,

Looking out of our window in Blairhill Towers, it's clear and blue and beautiful ... time for some summer gigs we think! We've just confirmed an outdoors gig at the Midlands Music Festival at Tamworth Castle - a piano-vocal set along with artists like Billy Ocean, Level 42 and Hot Chocolate. Profits are going to ‘Just 1 Life’ - a premature babies charity in Birmingham, so it won't just be a great day out, but all for a good cause too.

Don't forget our forthcoming Kilmarnock gig at the Palace Theatre on 27th May. It's always a thrill to take an acoustic piano vocal set into a major venue - lots of pin-drop moments and real intimacy to be had on those nights. Hope to see you there.??

And on the forthcoming new studio album - if you've been visiting the Hue And Cry Music Club, you'll know that we have been running a very rich 2010 Studio Diary blog. Lots of details of how it's coming together, exclusive clips from the rehearsal room, snatches of new songs, Greg's detailed production notes... If you want to look inside the highs (and sometimes lows) of making a record, this is where to go. It's sounding good'n'funky'n'soulful, we're excited, hopefully you will be too!

Ok, after you've read this, clicked a few ticket links (of course), go out and get some early-summer rays, and we'll see you at some of these forthcoming gigs. Make sure to say hello if you're there!

best, pat and greg x??
